What is OKF?

The Open Knowledge Format (OKF) is a portable way to represent knowledge as plain Markdown files with structured YAML frontmatter, linked together like a wiki. A single unit of knowledge is called a concept — a Markdown file with a required type field and optional metadata like title, description, resource, and tags.

Concepts are organized into directories, optionally described by reserved index.md files, and can record change history in a reserved log.md. Provenance, verification, and lifecycle state can be layered on with additional frontmatter conventions.

What OKF is not

OKF is not a database, not a replacement for Schema.org structured data, and not a guarantee of anything about search rankings or AI citations. It's a representation format — what a system does with an OKF bundle is up to that system.

OKF Tools recommendation

Accurate framing: "OKF is a portable knowledge representation format designed for humans and AI agents." We avoid claims like "OKF guarantees AI citations" or "OKF improves Google rankings" — those are not part of the specification.

Why OKF Tools exists

OKF Tools is an independent developer utility suite for creating, converting, validating, repairing, exploring, auditing, and maintaining OKF bundles. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google. See the About page for the full disclaimer.
